Washing down stucco, concrete and siding — the step before paint, and a job in its own right.
Almost every exterior repaint starts here. Stucco and siding in the valley carry a layer of agricultural and road dust that is bonded on rather than loose, and paint applied over it is bonded to the dust rather than to the wall. Washing down first is not a nicety; it is what makes the coating stick.
It is also worth doing on its own. Concrete driveways and walkways in Bakersfield pick up oil, rubber scuffs and a gray film of valley dust that makes relatively new concrete look tired. Hot water lifts oil and grease in a way cold water does not, which is the difference on a driveway or a restaurant service area where there is grease on the ground.
Pressure is chosen for the substrate rather than turned up. Stucco will erode under too much pressure and old wood siding will fur up and splinter, and both are permanent. Concrete takes a great deal more. Getting that judgment right is most of the skill in the job.
Where a washdown is being done as preparation for painting, the surface has to dry fully before anything is coated — usually a day in Bakersfield summer heat, considerably longer in winter fog. That gets built into the schedule rather than discovered on the day.

Ray’s team did a great job on my garage doors. They had to cover a darker color that had become chalky, and used a superior product meant to withstand the sun on our west-facing doors. They were patient with me when I was unsure of which sheen I should use, and I’m very happy with the results! The new color matches the color of my home, which was also a concern of mine.
